As you sail outward from Mars towards Jupiter you will travel through a region of small rocky objects which orbit the sun. This region is called the asteroid belt. But don’t worry, the asteroid belt is so large that you are unlikely to come anywhere near an asteroid. However, if you look very closely, you might spot the one called “martinduncan”. The astronomers who discover new asteroids have the right to name them, subject to the approval of the International Astronomical Union. Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan” was one of several discovered by astronomers at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, who named them after astronomers who had made noteworthy contributions to the field of planetary science.
