In the outer parts of the Solar System, there are billions of small (1-100 km) icy bodies orbiting the Sun. Occasionally one of these objects is gravitationally jostled into a new orbit that brings it much closer to the Sun. When the Sun heats up the icy exterior of the body, dust particles embedded in the ice are released and stream behind the body, reflecting sunlight.
