In addition to individual stars in the night sky, there are giant clouds of dust and gas. Each of these is called a nebula (Latin for mist). Some are dark patches in the sky that hide background stars and others are bright and colorful cloud-like regions of light-emitting gas. A nebula can be created from gas and dust thrown off by dying stars or from dense regions of contracting gas and dust where new stars are forming. The Lagoon Nebula is an example of a bright and colorful star- forming nebula and one of only two that can be seen with the naked eye. With a telescope you can see many red and blue swirls in two bright regions surrounding a dark region. This nebula resembles a lake surrounded by an island of light.
