The Trojans are two large groups of asteroids that share the planet Jupiter’s orbital path around the sun. One group always orbits far ahead of Jupiter and the other group orbits well behind the planet. These asteroids are believed to have been trapped into their orbits very early in the history of the solar system. Therefore, they represent samples of the small bodies from which our planets were formed – much like fossils on Earth show the development of life on Earth.
An unmanned spacecraft is on its way to fly by several of these ancient asteroids and study them close up. The spacecraft is called Lucy, in honor of an early ancestor, named Lucy, whose fossils were found in Ethiopia. This piano piece is dedicated to Dr. Hal Levison, the leader of the Lucy spacecraft project and a collaborator and close friend of the authors. Dr. Martin Duncan
