Near the end of a star’s lifetime on the Main Sequence, the hydrogen in its core has largely been converted into helium. The core contracts in size and the outer parts of the star expand to sizes that are tens to hundreds of times larger than that of the Sun. This outer envelope is typically cooler than the Sun and appears reddish in color. The star as it ages is said to have become a Red Giant.
