In southern California the hot and dry Santa Ana winds whip through the canyons and passes, often inflaming small sparks or fires into very dangerous ones. I wrote this piece after a sabbatical with my husband and family in Isla Vista, California. One day the sky became very dark and smoky and we were all told that we might have to evacuate our homes. The Santa Anas had picked up and there was fire approaching. The fire fortunately didn’t get to us, but we could see the water bombers in the distance. The piece came to me later, one morning in San Antonio Texas. I couldn't stop writing it and had finished it before my children returned home from school. Usually the creative process is not quite so quick for me.
