The next planet past Jupiter is Saturn, which is famous for having large rings of icy particles orbiting it. The rings were first noticed by Galileo in 1610. Through his primitive telescope, he thought that it looked like Saturn had ears. Having sent several spacecraft past Saturn, we now know that its rings are not solid, have many gaps and are made of small icy particles. The age and origin of the rings are not fully understood.
