A typical galaxy spends its life in a relatively quiet state, with new stars forming and older stars dying at moderate rates. A starburst galaxy, on the other hand, is one in which stars are forming at an exceptionally high rate – up to a thousand times faster than in a normal galaxy. This frenzied stage of star formation leads to a dramatic increase in the brightness of the galaxy. This means that starburst galaxies can be seen at distances of billions of light years with modern telescopes. The starburst phase is usually related to galaxies interacting, colliding and sometimes merging with one another. Since the light has come to us from such great distances, we are actually seeing the galaxies as they were many billions of years ago, in their more youthful and energetic phases. These images give us some insight into the stages in the life of our own galaxy – the Milky Way.
