There are stars distributed all over the sky, of different brightness, direction and
distance from the Sun. Our imaginations often see patterns in the arrangement
of these stars, even though the stars are often far apart and unrelated. These
visual patterns are called constellations. One of the most famous of these
groupings is popularly known in North America as the Big Dipper. It is composed
of seven bright stars, four that form the bowl and three that form the handle.
