THE JAPANESE TEA GARDEN is beautifully serene, set amidst limestone and water. Rising paths and steps wind from the bottom floor to the top edge. The stratified nature of the garden is reflected in this first piece of the set.

Performance Tips: In the opening the LH is the main event with the RH shadowing. At. M 10 the RH acts as a descant. At m. 21 it’s all about the semitone movement in both hands - this really helps with memory and accuracy. At m. 23 through 37, the LH is simply traditional chords with the third moved an octave up. Again, the RH has the winding, semitone obsessed part. The agitato brings back the beginning but with the RH ostinato figure.
