The surface of Mars is red because it contains large amounts of iron oxide, like rust. In the 1800s, Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli mapped the surface of Mars and claimed to see long, straight channels which he called “canali” in Italian. This word was mis-translated into “canals”, implying alien life built them on Mars. More powerful telescopes later showed that these features were only a product of human imagination. However, recent robotic explorations of Mars have found strong evidence that the planet once had large lakes and other Earth-like features billions of years ago. Scientists speculate that microbial life (for example, bacteria) may once have existed on Mars and our next generation of robotic rovers will be looking for fossil evidence below the Martian surface.
