THE RIVER is more improvisatory, as if the player is making it up as they go with the RH notes growing out of the main LH theme. It should have lots of rubato and flow - making sure that at the rolled chords one concentrates on the drama and complete sonority of the keyboard at these moments, not so much exact pulse. Those rolled chords should feel dramatic and never rushed. The timeless flow of water and the impact on the land by “the river” is represented here.
