As mentioned in the introduction, the solar wind is a stream of charged particles escaping from the Sun’s upper atmosphere. Occasionally, magnetic storms on the Sun interrupt the solar wind with bursts of moving charged particles. When these particles interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, they produce geo-magnetic storms, which cause large electrical currents in the Earth and can interfere with global communications.
